Regarding image resolution What is “dpi”?

As the first step, “resolution” shall be explained in advance.

“High Resolution” and “Low Resolution” are commonly heard. However, different people have different definition of what can be counted as “high” and “low”. For example, “High Resolution” refers to two possibilities as below.

  • High dpi set in image
  • High density image relatively

According to different context, it might represent various meaning.

Take “width 2000 pixel, height 1500 pixel” for example. Pixel (written in pixel, px, etc.) refers to digital unit, instead of referring to centimeters in real.

Shall the size with 2000 x 1500 px count as high or low in its resolution, then?

Though you may see it very clear by using smartphones, you cannot expect if it is used for printing. Dots  will be clearly seen if it is printed as a big poster.

If it is related to illustration or manga, “resolution” refers to “the density of pixel”.
“dpi” is the abbreviation of “dot per inch”, which indicated the number of dots (pixels) per inch. One inch is equivalent to 2.54 cm. To be brief, dpi shows the number of dots arranged within 2.54 cm.

Nonetheless to say, while dpi is much higher, the resolution is higher as well. Color illustration shall have at least 350 dpi, and monochrome booklet shall have at least 600 dpi. (Depends on printing company)
To sum up, dpi referring “the density of its unit while exporting or printing”. If you are working on a computer, there shall be no worries for any setting. Basically, 350 dpi or 600 dpi shall be fine, though.
